Dari-ette
Since 1951, this eatery with window-side service has been serving up Italian goodies such as meatball sandwiches, spaghetti, and pizza burgers with window-side service. It also offers summer staples such as BLTs, burgers, and malts. 1440 Minnehaha Ave. E., St. Paul, 651-776-3470

Minnetonka Drive-In
This authentic 1960s drive-in by lake Minnetonka offers fried chicken, onion rings, sloppy joes, and a pizza burger. Its homemade root beer is popular and Hot Rod Thursdays feature a car show. 4658 Shoreline Dr., Spring Park, 952-471-9383

Peppermint Twist
About forty minutes west of the cities is this small-town gem, which serves drive-in standards such as specialty burgers, fish sandwiches, and mini tacos. Shakes—especially the one made with chunks of candy peppermint—are the signature. 115 Babcock Blvd., Delano, 763-972-2572

Porky’s Drive-In
Located on one of the busiest streets in the metro area, Porky’s is the grittiest local drive-in, with a pig sign and checkered décor. It’s a hot-rod hangout as well. But you need to order at a counter here, there are no car hops. 1890 University Ave., St. Paul, 651-644-1790

Wagner’s Drive-In
With service at your car window or at picnic tables, this tiny shack serves up some of the area’s best burgers with all the trimmings and great fries. Wagner’s is now open year-round, serving lunch in the winter with full service April through October. 3712 Quebec Ave. S., St. Louis Park, 952-933-1857
