Dancing Ganesha

The owners of NalaPak in Columbia Heights have brought their game Downtown. Opened in the former Willie’s Wine Bar space, Dancing Ganesha offers a wide range of Indian food. While the architecture of the space didn’t change much, it has been warmed up with soft colors and hand-painted murals. The menu offers traditional dishes such a tikka masala and moghlai, to more contemporary items such as lobster peri peri: skewers of marinated lobster cooked in the tandoor. The lunch buffet, served during the week, looks to be varied and generous.

My first impression? Not so good. A friend of mine is a GM at a nearby restaurant. She was having a panic attack over something they were out of and needed. I helped her by calling local restaurants that could possibly help by loaning the specific ingredient she was in need of. I called The Dancing Ganesha and they were downright rude and unhelpful. The chef wasn't in, they had just opened and the chef wasn't in? The manger was far too busy to even speak on the phone. Even though he was the one that answered? From the reception we recieved on the phone, I wouldn't even consider giving them my money. There are far too many choices out there and they have already made themselves a choice I would not make.

A bad review of the restaurant because they wouldn't loan an ingredient to a competitor? Wow.

Dancing Ganesha used to be alright and my husband and I would go there once in a way. But last night we went there for dinner and without exaggeration, it was so terrible that it turned out to be the worst Indian food experience in the twin cities. The food was flavorless, the only spice we could taste was sugar -- in north indian food! Every dish was sweet. The tomato based curries tasted like tomato ketchup. The super loud music made normal dinner table conversation an impossibility. The staff was way too rushed and forgot to get half the items we called for. The lighting was terrible with blue lights everywhere that made the blah tasting food look just as blah!

Dancing Ganesha is now under a new operator and between the word of mouth and how busy it has become; it is obviouls things have changed.
