The other night, the amalgamation of people at the new Butcher Block included empty nesters from nearby condos, young families with baby carriers, and an extended table of tattooed bikers and their black-clad ladies. This seems perfect for a place offering finely crafted Italian cuisine, cutting edge burgers and snacks, and 29 flavors of wings. Furthering the identity split, the space bears the same formal chairs, tables, and floors of the old Fugaise, yet it is run by very young servers in T-shirts and jeans. But when you focus on the food your head will clear: pastas are toothy and richly flavored, salads are generous, a burger with a fried egg is monstrous, and the wings are pleasing and a great value. Offered until 4 a.m. on weekends, the late-night menu is packed with sandwiches and egg dishes, clearly aimed at the entirely different cast of characters that will occupy the space after bar close. —Stephanie March
