How can you not like a restaurant that claims it is “dedicated to bringing peace and pleasing palates”? The appropriately named Gandhi Mahal recently opened near the burgeoning food intersection of Minnehaha and East Lake Street, adjacent to sushi spot Midori’s Floating World Café and around the corner from the Town Talk Diner. You will indeed feel peaceful in the lovely surroundings, and the food will also put you in a tranquil state—even after the bill. Puffy naan ($3) with pickled mango is outstanding, as is the cilantro chutney and basmati rice, complimentary with entrées such as chicken Delhi masala and palak panner. At $12, both are well-prepared, well-spiced, delicious versions of northern Indian fare. Gandhi also offers a lassi bar that features refreshing yogurt-based drinks with fruits such as banana, strawberry, and mango, as well as other more exotic choices—taste three sample-sized lassis for $5. A lunch buffet is available for $9.95.
