Cheeky Monkey is a new deli specializing in upscale sandwiches (both hot and cold) with downscale counter service and prices that let you take a big bite, but don’t bite back. Take, for example, the pot roast sandwich. Hearty braised chuck lovingly stuffed into a nicely chewy ciabatta roll and dancing with flavors even your grandma would love—horseradish, pickled onions, and arugula. Grams would especially like the price, a bona fide bargain at $7. Cheeky Monkey offers a few craft beers for $5 a pint and a comfortable room with big windows that offer a lovely view of passersby along St. Paul’s resurrected Selby Avenue corridor. Twenty years ago there was a sign that read “Visualize the positive on Selby and Dale” in the vacant lot where Mississippi Market now stands. Happily, that is something easily done at Cheeky Monkey. 525 Selby Ave., St. Paul, 651-224-6066
