Although Mike’s Butcher Shop has been a staple among in-the-know meat eaters for the past nineteen years, it doesn’t get written up for its menu very often. Owner Mike Quast and cohorts bring the kind of flair to a butcher counter that you just can’t get at Cub. The roast beef sandwich is about the only item Mike’s will make for you—though there’re plenty of good eats to be had here if you’re willing to fire up the grill at home.
The sandwich falls under the category of secrets that are just too good to keep. Butchers slow roast the beef until it’s fall-apart, fork-tender and serve hunks of it up on a soft white bun either plain or with your choice of condiments, including barbecue sauce or horseradish. At $3, it’s a bargain and well worth the trip. While you’re there, be sure to pick up some of the hand-cut meats, killer homemade sausage links, or toothsome jerky.
