The brightly named Café Limon is tucked into a sunny little sliver of a storefront at Lake and Lyndale. But don’t let the size fool you. Inside, you’ll find some big deals on Latino-inspired sandwiches known as tortas. There are easily a dozen choices on the chalkboard, all $5.95 or $6.95, and I would happily try each. The options run from the common Jamon (ham and cheese with lettuce, tomato, and onion on a French roll with a luscious smear of chipotle mayonnaise) to the more unusual Frijolada (refried beans with cilantro, pickled carrots, and cauliflower with queso fresco on focaccia). My personal favorite has to be the Cubano (pictured), a double whammy of silky braised pork and salty-sweet honey ham paired with pickles, garlic aioli, and grainy mustard that is pretty close to heaven on a French roll—a veritable UN of a sandwich. If you aren’t in the mood for sandwiches, Café Limon offers creative salads as well as tamales, tacos, and burritos.
