Smalley's Caribbean Barbeque and Pirate Bar

$$ | BBQ/Ribs/Jamaican

The La Belle Vie boys have rejoined the Stillwater community. Smalley's has edge and sass, claiming to be the first restaurant in the country to cook over Jamaican pimento wood. Look for traditional barbecue and authentic Jamaican jerk dishes, such as jerk pork skewers with scotch bonnet aioli, hot wings by the pound, and fried green tomatoes with horseradish.

So, Jamaican barbecue has a lot of allspice going on: There's the allspice marinade, the allspice smoke, and, naturally, the allspice in the barbecue sauce. It's unlike any barbecue I've ever had before.

Ironically, the biggest disappointment about Smalley's Caribbean Barbeque was the Caribbean barbecue, as most meats had either flavor or moisture, but not both.

Good. Smalley's brings a flavor of the Caribbean to Minnesota by offering an authentic Jamaican BBQ experience...rum and all. You have to go to Smalley's with an open mind... if you go expecting traditional BBQ flavors, you will be sorely disappointed.

... but it's the meat and seafood that makes Smalley's a genuine destination. That, along with the bar's long roster of splashy rum drinks and a good Key lime tart.
