There are two dozen such "antipasti" selections, and they are collectively well-conceived and more enjoyable than not. In addition, there's a daily variant of a knockout cracker-crust pizza, a half-dozen pastas sensibly available in half or full portions (on Fridays, indulge with an order of the rich signature lobster gnocchi in white truffle beurre blanc), and a short but balanced listing of mains.

But the best way to experience D'Amico Kitchen is by snacking your way through a series of small plates, treating the place as an Italian version of 112 Eatery. The dinner menu's extensive antipasti list has several selections of meat, seafood, salads, crudo, vegetable, and fried dishes. Nearly everything sounded good: I haven't been so excited about small plates since Solera opened six years ago.

Entrées like chicken under a brick and roast suckling pig are done simply but well, in a nice understated and competent way. That these dishes are whisked in and out by the legendarily attentive and decorous (and gratifyingly adult) Cucina wait staff, many of whom made the journey to the Kitchen, makes dining here particularly pleasant, as does the wine list, which is long on older vintages at reasonable prices.

So, I came out with a mixed bag of an experience. I loved the new atmosphere, bustling space, and caponata antipasti but didn't love the service and a couple of my dishes.

That leaves me with little inspiration to return to D'Amico Kitchen: the midweek dining room lacked buzz and the food was only okay. Am I missing something that is the most amazing dish in the world at D'Amico Kitchen? Right now I am missing Jean-Georges...
