112 Eatery

Editor's Choice
$$$ | New American

This small, chic eatery in the historic Amsterdam Building is the perfect setting for chef Isaac Becker's upscale take on a neighborhood restaurant. 112 Eatery is a sophisticated spot serving bold food with a European- and American-influenced modern approach. Expect everything from sweetbreads to bacon-and-egg sandwiches and tres leches cake.

112 Eatery is that rare thing, the cure for the malady you don't even know you have. It's a restaurant for restaurant people, for people who want and expect the good stuff, and know exactly what it costs. It's a place that knows exactly how things are done, but throws it all out the window and does something new. It is, in short, a revolutionary thing in this town, and something that speaks explicitly about the development of our local restaurant culture, about the size, number of participants, and sustainability of it all.

I don't think Becker is simply being cute when he calls his restaurant an eatery instead of a bistro or trattoria or American grill. At a time when a lot of restaurants are selling sizzle, image and dining experience, he's making a statement: This isn't about the image or the ambience, it's about the food.

Here's the critical thing that should be understood about 112 Eatery if you haven't heard it or understood it before: The place is an amazing value. It's a steal. It's an outrageous bargain basement deal.

Two decades ago, the New French Bar was about as hip as it got, a riotous party in a small space, absent pretense or affectation. 112 Eatery is organically hip in the same way. It strikes every note perfectly. Neither restaurant was developed in a conference room or with a focus group. That¹s the nature of hip.

And truly, we want to stay there---if not forever, at least most of the night, sipping wine and partaking of fare that doesn't have to bust your monthly budget.

Eclectic, where "taste takes center stage", the service is "excellent" and the atmosphere "immediately puts you at ease"

Excellent. One of a kind eatery in the Twin Cities with a chef that has received his share of accolades. 112 serves excellent eats until late at night and satisfies all palates and budgets.

... we sat upstairs, which somehow seemed more calming and less hectic, as no one was nearby hovering coveting the table.

For my money-specifically, for my measly seven bucks-I'd rather tuck into the bacon, egg and harissa sandwich at 112 Eatery.

No wonder this spot has been a tough reservation since the day it opened three years ago.

Though romance isn't immediately associated with this acclaimed Warehouse District gastropub, 112 Eatery is a great date spot for several reasons.

Another Becker trick is twisting the familiar until it feels almost brand new. His burger is unapologetic decadence, a thick patty composed of ground beef, eggs, thyme and onions liberally sautéed in butter, grilled to mouth-melting perfection, crowned with a fat slab of melted Brie and wedged into an English muffin.
