Al's Breakfast

Editor's Choice
$ | Breakfast

It's considered a rite of passage for U of M students and pancake-o-philes of any age. Go to Al's, stand behind the row of 14 counter seats occupied by lucky eaters, and wait patiently for your turn to dig into the legendary blueberry-walnut cakes. Bring cash and a willingness to slide your whole breakfast down a seat if they ask. A landmark.

At Al's Breakfast, the noble breakfast arts are practiced with the keen mind of a Zen master. People line up around the block if not to sit at the his feet, then at least to find a spot at his counter.

Zagat
The "best" breakfasts and a "show" (i.e. "sardonic" staffers) are served up at this "cheap-eats" "time warp" in Dinkytown where the "greasy-spoon" chow includes "unforgettably" good pancakes and hash browns among its coffee shop/diner menu ...

If you are willing to stand in line in a crowded place that has no ambience (think messy college dorm room), with servers yelling back and forth, for a great cheap meal, this place is for you! Bottom-line, Al's offers delicious and cheap breakfast eats but if you need your space and are looking for a relaxing experience, stay away from Al's.
