The food boasts the nuance, imagination and technical prowess of some of the city's top kitchens, but Riebel keeps the tone playfully approachable and full of surprises, not unlike the jazz that lights up the Dakota's stage.

The grilled cheese was also more than anticipated. The small toasts melted with a yummy white cheese were speared through with a huge branch of rosemary. As you pulled each piece from the rosemary spear, it picked up flecks and the flavor of rosemary.

If you're snacking in the bar, don't miss the cornmeal crab and catfish cakes which love a tall frosty beer. The digs are sleek and cool, and the servers are well-trained to be unobtrusive.

Reibel's menus and cooking are more stylized and manifestly creative, his technique is more obvious on the plate, and his kitchen's skills are unimpeachable. If there is a disconnect, it's that the menu lacks a culinary focal point or niche and is often overwrought, with too many elements and flavors on a plate.

Excellent for dinner. Dakota has found a winning combination - innovative food prepared with culinary deft and great live music from the best Jazz musicians. A word of caution, though - if you plan on going there for happy hour, you might feel unwelcomed and rushed.
