In contrast to many of its nearby hole in the wall competitors, Peninsula serves up ambition and flair. From a spacious, open-to-view kitchen gleaming with acres of stainless steel to the large, sturdy wooden tables to the indigenous sarongs wrapped around the wait staff, it's clear that a lot of thought has been paid not just to the food, but to the entire dining experience.

Peninsula ... isn't really the first Malaysian restaurant in the Twin Cities, but it's certainly the most ambitious, with the most extensive menu, and a level of ambience and amenities that other local Malaysian restaurants can't match.

The stir fried golden tofu was a dream. The tofu is homemade and each nugget is a wonderful, light, melt in your mouth experience. It is almost unbelievable, if all tofu were that good, I would be a tofuatarian.

Well, I've come to think of Peninsula, the new restaurant on Nicollet, as offering food that would be available to us if we had access to a few dozen of the best hawker stands representing all the contributing cultures. There are just that many dishes, and there are just that many diverse cooking preparations.

If your tongue is feeling jaded, take it to Peninsula, a Malaysian restaurant in Minneapolis's Eat Street district-and, more importantly, to a new culinary world. Peninsula is not the first Malaysian restaurant in the Twin Cities, but it may be the one that best showcases how this South Seas island archipelago has blended a diverse range of influences into its cuisine.
