$$$$ | French/Mediterranean
Acclaimed chef Tim McKee's sophisticated but recognizable Mediterranean fare remains as superlative as ever (offered á la carte or in tasting menus), and the elegant 510 Groveland setting has never been more radiant. The adjacent lounge offers delectable small bites and creative cocktails.

Whatever I tried showcased McKee's remarkable style of cooking, one in which bold spices and cooking styles that yield concentrated flavors are deployed, but somehow muted in execution so that no element of a dish ever overwhelms or shouts over another.

Any one of my first four courses could easily have made me happy in any restaurant in Minneapolis and I probably would have raved about it as being unique and wonderful tasting. Local chefs can take a lesson from Tim McKee on this one.

This course indicated to me what I would call the true theme of the meal which was the assortment and matching of different textures on the plate and in the mouth. It added a sense of "fun" to the meal that I had not anticipated.

I stress serious because it takes real stamina to make it through the nearly three-hour parade of courses.

As my fork smashed up a beautiful construction and I devoured the entire sugary city, I realized that La Belle Vie is not a place for skimping. Devote yourself to La Belle Vie's best, and you'll be rewarded with a monumental experience.

... what they don't know is that the lounge offers the same great food, plus a thrilling bar menu that doesn't make you feel like you're missing anything by snacking instead of dining.

But the service remains flawless, the wine list impressive and McKee's way of intricately layering flavors, textures and scents as magical as ever.

Though à la carte dining is available, do not miss the five-course tasting menu ($65, plus $45 for a supplemental wine flight) or the eight-course extravaganza ($80, plus $55 for wine). It's superb value.

So, what can I say other than that I have a love/hate relationship with La Belle Vie. I love them most of the time but I kind of hate them too.

Overall thought is that LBV has the fine dining down pat but a Lounge doesn't need the same kind of details - perfect silverware vs useful silverware or freshly baked crostini when some crackers would do.

Why, then, with the need for neckware and all, would a guy want to fork over his last paycheck-or two-to eat at such a place? Other than life-altering food, of course, two words: impeccable service. The kind of old-school service that's so good it practically disappears.

Consistently voted one of the top overall Twin Cities’ restaurants – and one of the most romantic -- La Belle Vie features distinctive French Mediterranean cuisine. Since opening it has consistently topped ZAGAT® Restaurant Surveys for the highest-rated restaurant in Minnesota.
The restaurant’s dinner menu is an exciting, ever-changing Chef’s Tasting Menu that showcases McKee’s creativity and technique while taking advantage of the freshest, seasonal ingredients. The restaurant also features an impressive wine list that Food & Wine magazine declared one of the country’s 10 best wine lists.
The spacious lounge with its cozy sofas, banquets and regal fireplace has its own distinctive menu, offering a selection of casual French bistro-style fare with decidedly sophisticated touches, such as house-made potato chips in three flavors – garlic and rosemary, truffle and curry – and grilled lamb burgers with mint yogurt and hot peppers.
