Manny's Steak House at the W

Editor's Choice
$$$$ | Steak/Steak

Manny's is, for many, the quintessential local steak experience. Now in posh digs at the W Hotel, it seems refreshed and ready for the next 20 years. We love the rib eye, the best veal chop in town, and the stellar wine list. The bar is still as welcoming as they come, and there's no denying the addictiveness of Manny's hash browns.

If I had one wish for Manny's, it would be to spend less time focused on portion size as its trademark and instead make quality its signature. The new Manny's offers better ambience and the same big-city service, but on the high-end side of its menu, it is standing still while many of the country's best steak houses are not.

The Manny's difference begins at the host stand, which is staffed not by awkward, low-paid teenagers but by management-level employees who take their service as seriously as concierges-yet still know how to crack a joke.

This is where the stylish carnivores gather and where wheelers deal while they discuss the finer differences between single malt and blends. And in between, they are fed like royalty.

I'll go to Manny's for dinner when I want to spend exorbitant amounts of money on plush, gargantuan piles of beef and prestigious Napa Valley wines, and when I want to feel like I am in the absolute center of power in Minneapolis.

Because even though that salad is utterly skippable and some of the sides are only so-so, Manny's top steaks are those for a carnivore's carnivore.
