Good things happen when you turn a kitchen over to a couple of pros.

After all, what says "We love food, but we're not snooty-warm up, why don't you" more than a hot meal-in-a-bowl for four bucks?

The food may not be hip, but what I sampled was impressive. Call it comfort food with a twist. The beef and cabbage borscht added just a hint of spice to a very flavorful meaty broth, while the Belgian endive salad with persimmons and hazel was refreshingly light and playful.

The menu, like the space, is spare and straightforward, with thoughtful bistro-inspired dishes. Starters such as potato pancakes with smoked whitefish salad seem both original and classic.

Nick and Eddie is the perfect place to soak up last night's party or gab with girlfriends while digging into baked eggs on brioche with ham, French toast, family platters of scrambled eggs, and delightfully crisp hash browns.

My take so far on Nick & Eddie is that the space is really nice but it still needs to work out its kinks in service and on the menu. Kill the vegetarian risotto, better describe the entrees and desserts (more than once our server said "it is a lot better than it is described on the menu"), and pull the staff into better training (always get the alcohol on the table fast!).

Continuing this trend of some things being fabulous and others not so remarkable, I loved the bread basket - there were these wonderful yeasty parker house type rolls that I should have just eaten rather than my risotto. Then there was the chocolate roll up dessert - a boring, and somewhat dry, chocolate cake combination.

There are dozens of places that serve Caesar salad, oysters on the half-shell and grilled meats and fish. But this unpretentious spot does it with panache, from the clean, contemporary decor to the state-of-the-art sound system.
