The La Chaya Huevos Rancheros were a far cry more elegant than the in your face hugeness of those from Hell's Kitchen or most of the other restaurants in town. A simple corn tortilla was gracefully topped with perfectly circular fried eggs and salsa.

In addition to the solid, simple, organic-when-possible Italian fare is a smattering of artfully upscale Mexican dishes, such as the tiny, perfectly tender poached baby octopus, served with an elegantly understated potato salad, or a large halibut fillet in a green-pumpkin-seed mole.

After several visits, I found La Chaya to be a great spot for relaxing with a glass of wine and a little something to nosh on. My favorite appetizer was a plate of oyster mushrooms sautéed with garlic and chiles, scooped onto slices of grilled bread.

Instead, he's borrowing from his native Mexico -- and from Italy, where he worked -- and devising a menu that wisely doesn't fuse the two cultures but pairs them side by side. It's a welcome change of pace, and, more often than not, it works.

Although the tiny open-to-view kitchen might be a limiting factor, I personally would enjoy a menu with a bit more ambition and breadth. There were only seven entrée choices, and only two of them ... offered any notable depth.
