Tom Arndt's Minnesota

February 11, 2009

By Tad Simons

Minnesota photographer Tom Arndt has been chronicling everyday life in Minnesota for the past forty years, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts is honoring his singular dedication with an ambitious retrospective of his work. The seventy-five black-and-white photographs in the exhibition represent a small fraction of the thousands of photographs Arndt has taken over the years, and they provide a snapshot of Arndt’s continuing love affair with all things Minnesota. The photos trace the changing cultural landscape of our state as well as the timeless Minnesota of small-town festivals, Fourth of July celebrations, and of course the State Fair—what Arndt calls “the real soul of Minnesota.”
