In Our Own Backyard: U.S. Poverty in the 21st Century

July 3—August 30, 2009

Mpls Photo Center

2400 N. 2nd St., Mpls, 612-643-3511

The Mpls Photo Center chose Independence Day weekend to open an ambitious photography project chronicling contemporary poverty in the United States. The exhibit features more than 100 photographs from some of the country’s most acclaimed photographers and photojournalists. But the photos aren’t quite what you’d expect. Says MPC director Orin Rutchick: “These photographs don’t show all of the pain and suffering. They infer it, and that’s much more powerful because it allows people to engage with the image instead of being overwhelmed by it.”
