Mayda Miller is a Korean–American whiz whose chops and musicianship landed her a gig headlining last year’s She Rock Festival. Recording with superproducer Michael Bland, Mayda blends funk and classic rock with an original bluesy vibe. Her debut EP Stereotype was followed in March by a full-length CD, The Interrogation.

LIVES IN: St. Paul

HER SOUND: I just try to do my own thing. I have [always] been drawn to emotion and rhythm—funk and R & B just speak to me.

ON THE NEW CD: Stereotype was just a taste of who I am. The Interrogation is more of a full-course meal. You get a better understanding of [me] as an artist, both musically and lyrically.

RECORDING WITH SUPERPRODUCER MICHAEL BLAND: We communicate [and] work incredibly well together. Some things don’t even need to be spoken. It is really nice to have that kind of relationship when dealing with creativity and art.

PLAYING AT SHE ROCK: [It] was fun to play because it was a new project. I really enjoyed being around so many diverse ladies (and men) who just wanted to get together and have fun. I hope it becomes a tradition.

INFLUENCES: Sly and the Family Stone, Skip James, Bruce Lee, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Clash, Curtis Mayfield, Garbage, and many more.
