First Avenue

There's no denying that First Avenue has played an integral role in the history of Twin Cities music. First opened as The Depot in 1970, the notorious club brought in DJs, disco, and performances from Tina Turner, Frank Zappa, and B. B. King, to name a few. It wasn't until 1981 that the venue became known as First Avenue. For the next few years, Prince made it his regular stomping ground, as well as the set for his movie, Purple Rain. The club's rich history and dedication to showcasing local musicians has kept First Avenue in the hearts of local music lovers for more than three decades. On any given night, an enormous line of fans stands outside the black building, anxiously awaiting the doors to open. Hosting everything from rock to hip-hop to hardcore punk from both up-and-comers and internationally known musicians, First Avenue isn't going anywhere anytime soon. (And we have no problem with that.)
