o’clock: Few Americans love winter (and ice fishing) more than Minnesotans, and two years ago, the Soap Factory decided to celebrate with an exhibition. Now in its third year, the Art Shanty Projects, held on Medicine Lake, involves live theater performances, drive-in movies (when the ice is thick enough), and, of course, whimsical ice houses and art installations. Opens Jan. 13. Medicine Lake, Plymouth, 612-623-9176
o’clock: After spending time outside, head indoors to the Modern Cafe and join the other rosy-cheeked diners for a taste of goodness from Mom’s kitchen. Can’t decide what to order? The classic pot roast—a mound of tender beef, vegetables, and fluffy mashed potatoes—is sure to satisfy. 337 13th Ave. NE, Mpls., 612-378-9882
o’clock: Though the nutcrackers and other holiday decorations have been put away, the lighted trees keep Rice Park festive. Don some skates and take a few turns around Wells Fargo Winterskate before the outdoor rink closes for the season. Through Jan. 17. Market St. & E. 5th St., St. Paul, 651-291-5608
o’clock: If you’re after more outdoor fun, a quick change of clothes and you can be gliding along one of the four lighted cross-country ski trails in the Three Rivers Park District. Cleary Lake Regional Park and Hyland Lake Park Reserve have the longest lit trails, 3.9 and 3.3 kilometers, respectively, and are open until 10 p.m. Cleary Lake, 18106 Texas Ave., Prior Lake, 763-694-7777; Hyland, 10145 Bush Lake Rd., Bloomington, 763-694-7687
o’clock: Prog jazz trio Happy Apple plays three shows at the subterranean Artists’ Quarter, where the jazz sizzles even on the coldest of nights. Jan. 12–14. 408 St. Peter St., St. Paul, 651-292-1359
