$196 might seem a little steep for a skirt, but with an original price tag of nearly $600, it’s about as cheap as it gets for a great investment piece. GH2, 318 Hennepin Ave. E., Mpls., 612-378-0509
We sent local fashion stylist Sarah Cochran to sift through the slew of Twin Cities discount-clothing and consignment stores and vintage boutiques to find the best places to get a bargain—season-old Dolce & Gabbana skirts, vintage furs, cheap, trendy jewelry. We’ll help you refine your style while staying on budget.

Couture Consignment
If you pine for Prada and go gaga for Gucci, check out the designer consignment at Fashion Avenue, where all of the big name designers are represented. The near-new, no-more-than-two-season-old ready-to-wear items are the big draw for fashionistas, but there are also great designer handbags and accessories. 4936 France Ave. S., Edina, 952-929-7919
Brand New Rag
Camille Gagnon has given the former Vogue consignment a complete overhaul. Gone are the brand-name sweater sets and worn-out shoes, now Rags from Riches takes only fine consignment—Louis Vuitton handbags, filmy Dolce & Gabbana tanks, Donna Karan Black Label suiting, David Yurman, Tiffany, and Roberto coin jewelry—as well as a select number of vintage coats and furs. 848 E. Lake St., Wayzata, 952-473-1435
Refined Style
While Fashion Avenue may have the largest collection of designer consignment, Rodeo Drive’s refined classics are worth a look. For ladies who lunch, check out the large selection of St. John. 4110 Minnetonka Blvd., St. Louis Park, 952-920-0188

Budget Store, Big on Fashion
Hands down, the St. Louis Park locale is the best TJ Maxx in the Twin Cities. The fantastic designer and couture pieces take up only a tiny portion of the store, but the selection of Dolce & Gabbana, Marc Jacobs, Valentino, Alice and Olivia, and Versace is a true stylemaven’s dream. Knollwood Mall, 8322 Hwy. 7, St. Louis Park, 952-238-1039

Retro Destination
St. Paul’s Retro Loop is known for its midcentury modern haunts (See page 95), but you can also find great vintage. Check out Up Six’s vintage button downs, fall coats, and the occasional pair of killer vintage boots. Around the corner, Lula’s rotating merchandise often reflects each season’s trends. The racks are packed, so if you are looking for something specific, ask owner Hayley Bush—she’ll help you find exactly what you want. Lula’s, 1587 Selby Ave., St. Paul, 651-644-4110; Up Six, 157 Snelling Ave. N., 651-917-0470
Time to Rewind
Northeast Minneapolis’s Rewind Vintage is what a vintage store should be—small, expertly edited, and great for adorable, of-the-season trends. And the best part? It is seriously less expensive than the Cities’ other vintage stores. 2829 NE Johnson St., Mpls., 612-788-9870
Department Store Cast-offs
There’s always a sale to be had at one of our many department stores, but to find the real deals, high-end outlets Saks Off 5th and Nordstrom Rack offer a solid selection of designer clothing, handbags, and shoes. Saks Off 5th has a great selection of designer jeans, shoes, sunglasses, and men’s suiting. During its “Find Your Better Half Sale” all items in the store are buy-one-get-one-half-off. Nordstrom Rack is a little more chaotic, but the offerings are well worth an afternoon of digging. If nothing else, stop in for the fantastic selection of shoes. Saks off 5th, Gaviidae Common, Mpls., 612-333-7200; Nordstrom Rack, Bloomington, Mall of America, 952-854-3131
Having it All

Head to St. Louis Park to find fashions and accessories from Versace, Ralph Lauren, Anne Klein, and Diesel—all at least 70 percent off retail. If you don’t have a ton of time, it is another great place to find a steal on a pair of shoes. The store also carries men’s and children’s fashions, so it’s one-stop savings for the entire family. 4320 Excelsior Blvd., St. Louis Park, 952-922-2435
