Even smarter? A lot of people are vastly smarter than I am. On the local front alone: musician Pablo, director Leah Cooper, and dancer Kristen Van Loon (of the dance company Hijack).
Genius? Toni Morrison—the finest writer of the twentieth century.
Books? Philosopher Susan Sontag’s On Photography and writer Jeanette Winterson’s Art Objects.
Best advice? “Talent and a quarter, kid. That’ll buy you a cup of coffee.” —My father, Jay Hornbacher.
Mentor? It sounds odd, but my agent Sydelle Kramer is the best mentor I’ve ever had. There are others, but she has guided me through twelve years of both career and—more importantly—life. She has also put up with an inordinate amount of weirdness on my part.
Biggest mistake? My first marriage. Not least for his sake.
Free time? Hike, read, spend time with friends, go to museums, galleries, and theater, and travel.
IQ pill? Hell, yeah.
Which kind of smart? Street smart.
Musician? Tom Waits.
Greatest impact? The environment.
Wisdom with age? Yes. I’m not that old yet.
Special responsibilities? That it be used to create or do something that improves the lives of others. Sitting on intelligence is a waste.
