It’s the classic rags-to-riches tale: Barbarian root leads a sad little life as a questionable medicinal remedy but eventually ascends to a noble position as celebrated pie ingredient. Never mind that the plant is indigenous to Asia; we Minnesotans have adopted it as our own. We like it because it grows so readily in our northern gardens and backyards, cropping up early in the season. But our most fervent affections are reserved for the tart and humble part it plays in jams, pies, bars, and countless other treats that keep us rooted to home.
