Rock Harbor Lodge
Isle Royale National Park is a road-less wilderness archipelago in northwest Lake Superior, only accessible by seaplane or boat. Aquatic environments abound both on and around the island. In fact, some 80 percent of the national park is under water as inland lakes and the deep, cold, foreboding Lake Superior waters. Commercial fishing, once the mainstay economic activity on the island, has been replaced by sport fishing — but the Island’s Edisen Fishery (run by the National Park Service) offers a fishery demonstration and cultural exhibit based on the rich history of commercial fishing at Isle Royale.
Island magic embodies unspoiled forests and rugged lakeshores and is inhabited by a unique collection of wildflowers and animals including the famed moose and wolf populations. For the adventure traveler, naturalist, outdoor enthusiast or avid fisherman and hiker, Isle Royale provides a dramatic escape—literally a disconnect— from the worries and fast pace of everyday life. Visitors can enjoy scenic hikes to view Lake Superior panoramas or sightseeing cruises to historic lighthouses and abandoned copper mines. With over 165 miles of hiking trails and 16 hours of summer daylight, visitors extend recreational activities far beyond normal hours. Additionally, summer visitors often experience the magic of the Aurora Borealis.
Isle Royale National Park was authorized by Congress in 1931 "to conserve a prime example of North Woods Wilderness." In fact, over 98% of the land in Isle Royale is designated wilderness. In 1981 Isle Royale was designated an International Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations, giving it global scientific and educational significance. Rock Harbor Lodge provides the only lodging in the Park including cabins and motel-style lake-front rooms and full service dining. Ferries from Grand Portage, MN, Houghton, MI and Copper Harbor, MI. Open Memorial Day through Labor Day, packages available. Groups welcome.
