Mpls.St.Paul presents 2005's extraordinary volunteers.October 2005 Whether a student or octogenarian, this year’s Volunteers of the Year said many of the same things—“No one ever wishes they volunteered less, only more,” or “I love to do it, and I will do it as long as I am able to.” Their love, dedication, time, energy, and generosity have built pages of resumés and legions of thankful fans, though most of those honored here insist it’s not about the accolades or thank-yous. Some say it’s a sense of duty, or a chance to repay what they have been given, or that they like the hugs. Some call it “that feeling inside.” For others, it’s “psychic income.” “I just couldn’t say no,” they’ll say. Not with a sigh, but with a smile, knowing it takes more of their time, but pays rewards more valuable than currency. In every case, they have gone to incredible lengths to—as they often reflect upon—leave the world a better place than they found it. They’ll insist they don’t deserve the honor, that they know a friend, co-worker, executive director, or relative who deserves it way more than they do, that someone else should have the spotlight. But their accomplishments are so extraordinary, they are impossible to capture on one page—resumé, magazine, or otherwise. This time, the spotlight is deservedly on them. And Mpls.St.Paul Magazine is proud to shine it.
