Q: Q: I’ve been invited to several formal events in the coming months, and the varying dress codes are confusing. Can you explain the appropriate dress for a black-tie gala, a cocktail party, and a semi-formal event?

A:
Deciphering dress codes can be difficult, especially for women.  A black-tie event calls for elegant and sophisticated attire such as a full-length gown and jewelry to accent. A nice dress with a simple up-do or soft curls will complete the look, so schedule an appointment with a professional hairstylist. Cocktail party dress offers more options in color and fabric, with hems often falling just above or below the knee. Accessories and makeup should complement, but always be appropriate for season and time of day. An event calling for semi-formal attire is more difficult to decipher, but playing it safe with a tea-length dress (longer than a cocktail dress but shorter than a full-length) and soft hair and makeup is a good bet.
