Q: My husband’s daughter is getting married this summer. I want to dress completely appropriate and elegant for the wedding, but I don’t know what to wear. Any advice?
A: While you want to look nice, you don’t want to steal the show. (It's the bride’s big day, after all.) Don’t wear anything too flashy, trendy, or low-cut—and definitely don’t wear something white or longer than the bride’s gown. For a warm-weather wedding, we suggest soft, summery colors, but try to avoid wearing the same color as the bridesmaids and wedding party. It would, however, be appropriate to find a shade that complements and doesn’t clash.
We suggest shopping at the new via C in Nordstrom for fashionable dresses by emerging designers, such as D&G Dolce & Gabbana, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Tory Burch, and Just Cavalli. Another one-stop-shop for special occasion dresses is Flutter Boutique in Uptown. Its Jenny Yoo and Saeyoung Vu Couture collections are full of fun colors and flattering fits. For more traditional and formal mother-of-the-bride gowns, head to Our Shop in Stillwater. Depending on how formal the wedding is, it is often perfectly acceptable for mothers/step-mothers to wear pants or dress suits. Check out Neiman Marcus for a great selection of suits by Tahari, Anne Klein, and Kay Unger.
