January 2009
By Melissa Colgan
When Lilly Pulitzer started selling her brightly colored warm-weather basics fifty years ago, resort wear was a notion only familiar to the jet-setting elite. But in recent years, the cruise collections have become a third fashion season, offering sartorial options not only for your winter escape, but also a bevy of pieces great for transitioning your wardrobe from winter to spring. But with the proliferation of options and prices comes another conundrum. What do you really need to pack for a week in the tropics? Here are our top picks.

Poolside attire should always err on the side of modesty. The flattering cut (halter straps, sweetheart neckline) of this graphic black-and-white rose print maillot is entirely chic. Suit ($114), by Robin Piccone, from Nani Nalu, 3922 W. 50th St, Mpls., 952-546-5598

The Coverup
Most coverups are characterized by so much color and pattern it’s hard to imagine them off the beach. We’re drawn to the sophisticated tailoring and graphic pattern of this tunic. Shibori print tunic ($29.99), by Thakoon for Target
