You're not alone if you think the jewelry at a certain contemporary art museum gift shop isn’t what it used to be. Meet Max. Actually, meet Ellen Hertz, the owner of Max’s, who left a highly successful corporate career to pursue her passions—finely handcrafted jewelry, home décor, and chocolate. “It was time to do something different,” she says, “and this was spinning in my mind for at least fifteen years.” The striking selection, which also includes art for the home, is proof that this owner has good taste in both confections and contemporary craft. Years ago, Hertz started a file of artists she discovered at similar shops and fine craft shows around the country, hoping one day to open her boutique. Goods in the Excelsior & Grand shop range from $40 earrings and a $40 platinum wine glass to a $3,000 necklace and a $3,500 glass wall sculpture—mixing modern twists on classic pieces with conversation pieces that are works of art. As for the chocolate? “I have to have chocolate every day,” Hertz says with a smile. We guess she’s not alone. 3831 Grand Way, St. Louis Park, 612-922-9405

What's to Love:

*  Open just three months, the shop is named after Ellen Hertz’s grandfather Max, who owned a Detroit-area jewelry store for more than fifty years.

*  Hertz has been steadily adding home wares and art pieces by glass, pottery, and metal artists.

*  The artisan chocolate lines are chosen for their quality and taste—beautiful packaging is the icing on the cake.

*  Ninety percent of the artists’ works sold here are unique (locally) to Max’s.

*  Did we mention the chocolate?
