Spend a few minutes with Lisbet Pia Franc, and you won’t need to ask what inspired her shop’s name. A country girl from Denmark, she’s traveled all over the globe and ended up in St. Paul after falling madly in love with a Midwesterner on an impromptu drive in Mexico. Now she’s married with a son and another baby on the way, and her free-spirited personality is ever-present at Danish Bohemia (1144 Grand Ave., St. Paul, 651-222-8383).

Inside the homey storefront—which was renovated by Franc and her parents, who were on a visit from Denmark—there’s an interesting mix of Scandinavian décor and design. Different rooms house Scandinavian antique furniture redone by Franc, home accessories, and clothing. There’s a rustic countryside feel throughout the shop, which is dressed up with ultrafeminine accessories. Tables are set with vintage accessories and china, offering a taste of what you might find at a Danish flea market. Nearby, a bed is made up in sweet, romantic pastels—some of the linens and pajamas are Rachel Ashwell’s boutique line, Shabby Chic (not to be confused with her line for Target), one of the few American labels in the store.

Tucked in various corners are colorful felt bags, hair clips, and slippers from a popular Copenhagen company En Gry & Sif, which means “only one.” Pieces—from the children’s elephant handbags to the happy floral coin purses—vary slightly in shape and color. There are ceramic dog bowls, beaded jewelry, custom baby clothes, and wedding dresses. One-of-a-kinds are everywhere.

Franc has years of design experience—she studied pattern-making in Denmark and worked in creative design for Hanna Anderson and Target. Now without corporate limitations, she is loving the opportunity to work with clients on fresh bridal designs for their big day. Franc has found a haven for her designs, which inspires shoppers to mix it up and throw on a pair of wooden clogs with their favorite girly dress.
