His Story: Aaron Porvaznik, a former art director for Target, founded online eco retailer Olive & Myrtle in 2009. “I came to a point in my career where I thought, ‘What if I could do anything I wanted?’ I’ve always had a passion for design and respect for the environment. I wanted to present elevated products that are environmentally sustainable and well-designed.”
Sustainably Stylish: The e-commerce site offers an impeccably curated selection of environmentally friendly home décor items, kitchen utensils, garden goods, green giftables, and items for pets and babies, all accompanied by detailed descriptions of the product’s source, materials, and eco-friendly certifications. A couple of clicks yields sustainably harvested bamboo and reclaimed coconut shell bowls for the kitchen; fair-trade organic cotton for the bathroom and bedroom; and, for grocery lists and math homework, funky sketchbooks made with recycled paper and vegetable-based inks and glues. And it’s all set in an easy-to-shop clean grid format.
Clicks Ahead: An airy second-floor office in St. Paul serves as warehouse and headquarters, and Porvaznik is the one-man show behind the operation. “I want to grow,” he says. “I want to be so busy that I don’t have time to ship packages anymore. I want the volume to expand. It would be so cool if I could create a job. Five jobs would be even better.”
