Who: George Moskal, local fashion designer known for his female-form–enhancing designs and brilliant use of natural silks and wools.

Plastic Beginnings: “I have been interested in fashion design since I was a child making clothing for my sister’s Barbies,” Moskal says. “I’ve been sketching since an early age and have kept all of my sketchbooks. From a child to a student in apparel design at the University of Wisconsin–Stout to studying abroad at Marylebone College of London to my current season, the books make for an interesting sort of ‘diary’ for me to follow my progression over the years.”

Textiles 101: “I prefer natural fibers such as silk, wool, and cotton because they are not only more attractive than synthetics, but they are also easier to sew with. Natural fibers hold shape better and last longer. For the past few years, I’ve been obsessed with silk and use it in everything. Before that it was wool.”

Touch of Class: “A George Moskal design evokes a timeless elegance with luxury fabrics, couture techniques, and an experimentation of the modern silhouette. I am influenced by the film noir greats, and my modern-day muse is Tilda Swinton. These women are unique, elegant, and confidant, all qualities which I adore.”

Vintage Inspiration: “I am constantly researching, sketching, and buying fabric. My favorite thing to do is go to the St. Paul Public Library on the weekend and pore through thousands of vintage fashion magazines.”

The TC Fashionista: “It is a really exciting time right now for Twin Cities fashion because of the indie boutiques popping up around the city. It’s bringing a more unique and individual look to the local woman and offers her something that she or her friends can’t get anywhere else. The whole idea of having a one-of-kind dress that no one else has is the new luxury.”

Not a Copy Cat: “I think I am very good at creating my own trends and it’s always fun to see others follow a season or two after. If something is already on the catwalks, it’s done to me. I strive to create modern classics that a woman would feel confident wearing season to season for years to come.”
