Ikat and Suzani
(e’kät) A style of weaving that uses a resist-dyeing process on either the warp or weft
before the threads are woven to create a pattern or design. Long popular in home
textiles, but recently everyone from Tibi to Balenciaga has embraced the pattern.
(soo•zä’ne): An antique decorative tribal textile made of chain, satin, and
buttonhole stitches that was first used in Central Asian countries and was
traditionally seen in bed coverings and wall hangings. Oscar de la Renta’s
recent Suzani-filled Spring 2008 collection has brought it to the forefront.
