It's a Mad, Mad World
April 2009
By Melissa Colgan
A season is never wholly reliant on a single trend. In fact, a handful of
designers pushed against the tide of basic sportswear for spring,
churning out
visions of urban eclecticism that are refreshingly
optimistic. The jumble of
patterns, textures, and colors—topped by a
healthy dose of irreverence in
accessorizing—can refresh the process of
getting dressed.

Edgy Florals
Bohemian florals are more edgy than sweet when oversized and shown against
black. Shoulder tie top ($188), by Nu Collective, from Bluebird Boutique, 3909

Metallic Skins
Skins were the biggest story in accessories for spring. For those who oppose
donning animaux sauvages or are too cash-strapped for the real thing, a faux
rendering with a dash of metallic is just as chic. Metallic leather miniaudiere
($152), by Inge Christopher Accessories, from Ladyslipper Boutique, 4940 France
Ave., Edina, 952-224-1900

Contrasting Prints
The key to this look is contrasting prints with similarities in scale and tone.

Mix and Match
Mute the femininity of this oversized floral by pairing it with a more geometric
print. Yellow and turquoise chiffon tie blouse ($127), from Belle Reve, 320

exaggerated figures. Gold with diamond daisy earrings ($740), from Max’s, 3831

Madcap Mix
Editor's Tip: A true magpie appears both urban and regal—as if she’s stolen ideas from
different cultures and seasons and layered them all on at once.
