We’re headed down a more polished path these days. Luxe finishes are popping up in home décor, and the luster of lacquer, high-gloss enamel, waxed leather, even vinyl and Lucite, are catching our eye. The beauty is that the effect can be found on traditional furniture in such classic colors as black, brown, cream, and deep red—but is very contemporary when traditional furniture silhouettes are drenched in bright pinks, ultra white, or apple green. Plus, you can’t ignore the prevalence of patent leather, high-luster reptile skins, and bright metallics on the fashion pages. The trend speaks to the classic couture maven with her always-in-vogue patent leather Chanel handbag and to her trend-forward sister who steers toward the wet-looking finish of a varnished leather bag seen this season. We did a little legwork on the local scene to see what we could find to help you get your shine on. (I’ve already added a red patent leather belt, alligator calfskin wallet—both local estate-sale finds—and a pair of Kenneth Cole pumps—from Macy’s—to my fall wardrobe.)

What’s lacquer?
Lacquer is a synthetic version of shellac, a clear or colored varnish that dates back to ancient Asia and comes from the secretions of the lac beetle. Fast-forward to the industrial age and the introduction of man-made acrylics, enamels, and polyurethanes in clear coats and a full spectrum of colors. In the end, it’s all about achieving a gloss, shine, polish, or sheen that reflects light.
