See the Mississippi River as Huck Finn did—by boat. You can rent a houseboat in Inver Grove Heights and spend three days afloat on America’s river. Forge upstream to St. Paul’s doorstep. Take a side trip up the St. Croix to Stillwater. Or venture as far downstream as Red Wing. You’ll visit historic river towns via their waterfronts, as travelers did 150 years ago. Watch bald eagles, deer, beavers, shorebirds, and other wildlife. Launch a canoe to explore backwaters, hunt for antiques, or try your luck at Treasure Island casino in Welch. You’ll have all the comforts of home, including a full kitchen and room to sleep as many as 10 people. In the evening, tie up to a sandy beach, cook dinner, and eat on the deck as you watch the sun set behind the river shore. You don’t need much experience; you’ll get instruction in basic navigation and boat operation. The best thing about river travel? You’ll feel connected to everything on the river, including America’s history.
