Where: Madison, Wisconson

Why: The new Cesar Pelli–designed Madison Museum of Contemporary Art is kicking off its grand opening with free tours, exhibitions, films, and live music. The thirteen-day fest starts April 23.

How: About four hours east on I–94 and a few miles south on Highway 51, which will take you right into the heart of things.

Stay: Head to retro Edgewater (800-922-5512). Overlooking Lake Mendota, the downtown hotel has a waterfront bar and restaurant. Room prices hover around $150 per night.

Eat: L’Etoile is one of the shining stars of the Madison scene, offering French-inspired fare that’s locally sourced (608-251-0500).

Pack: Designer sneakers. Madison is a walking town and chances are you’ll be doing lots of it.

P.S.: Stop by the museum store for a little souvenir art after lounging in the rooftop café and sculpture garden.
