Where: Lutsen

Why: Lutsen offers the highest and longest ski runs, as well as the only gondola in Minnesota. Lift tickets are as low as $27 online, and it’s a lot closer than the Rockies or the Sierras.

How: About a four-hour drive north on Highways 35 and 61.

Stay: Lutsen Resort has just the right après-ski ambiance, with fireplaces, hot tubs, and cocktails. Lodging ranges from $69 to $369, depending on the type of room or cabin. 218-663-7212

Eat: Have lunch at the deli on top of the mountain and dinner at nearby Bluefin Bay, where you can find seafood, burgers, and superior views. 7192 Hwy. 61 W., 800-258-3346

Pack: Skis, obviously, plus snowshoes for a walk in the woods.

P.S.: When you buy your lift tickets, book a sleigh ride for a romantic surprise.
