Why: Before you book a green vacation in Costa Rica, try a night in a true eco-retreat near Wisconsin’s Great River Road. Journey Inn is 100 percent earth-friendly, down to its cleaning products and solar-heating system. Plus, it’s open year-round, which is rare for the area. 715-448-2424

How: Maiden Rock is about one hour from the Twin Cities on Highway 35. The inn is just a few miles east of Lake Pepin.

Stay: The retreat has four nature-inspired guest rooms—Earth, Water, Air, and Fire (rates start at $110)—and includes organic linens, “whole food” brunches, walking trails, and other environmentally friendly, health-conscious touches.

Eat: Head south on Highway 35 to Nelson, where the Nelson Cheese Factory boasts locally made cheeses as well as pizzas and a gorgeous wine bar. 715-673-4725

Pack: Your spiritual side. Massages, life-coaching sessions, and other mind-body workshops are specialties here.

P.S.: Before you go, read our story “Highways 61 Revisited” for tips on where to go in town.
