Where: Cloquet

Why: The University of Minnesota’s Split Rock Arts Program offers three-day and weeklong workshops with renowned writers and artists throughout August. Tuition starts at $365.

How: Two hours north on I–35, then a short jog on Highway 33.

Stay: Immerse yourself in nature and bunk down at the Cloquet Forestry Center. Rustic but comfortable cabins come complete with showers, kitchens, and linens. Room and board is $372.

Eat: All meals are served in the dining hall, but do make a pilgrimage to Gordy’s Hi-Hat (218-879-6125), a local summer favorite for burgers and malts.

Pack: Sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat for the outdoor sessions.

P.S.: If you can’t make it, check out the program’s workshops and events offered on the Twin Cities campus.
