How: About forty minutes east of the Twin Cities; take I–94 east to County Road 18.

Stay: The Afton House Inn (3291 St. Croix Trail S., 651-436-8883) has twenty-five cozy rooms with Jacuzzis and fireplaces. During Valentine’s weekend, rates range from $99 to $305 and include complimentary Champagne and chocolate truffles.

Eat: The Inn’s candlelit Wheel Room restaurant has a new chef, Justin Grecco, who has updated things, including the Valentine “Sweetheart’s Menu.” Choose entrées from a prix fixe menu, while enjoying live entertainment and chocolates filled with liqueur.

Pack: Skis or snowboards for hitting nearby Afton Alps.
