Madeline Island

Madeline Island

January 2007

Where: Madeline Island

Why: Leftover Christmas trees line the “ice road” across Chequamegon Bay from Bayfield, guiding the brave souls trekking over on skis or in cars who prefer this hideaway sans summer crowds.

How: Access Madeline Island from Bayfield, ninety miles east of Duluth. A diesel-powered sled replaces the car ferry once the bay has frozen.

Stay: Find cozy rooms at the Island Inn, which is open year-round. 715-747-2000

Eat: Chances are you’ll be eating at the inn while on the island. If you’re craving a dose of civilization, book a room and table at Bayfield’s grande dame, the Old Rittenhouse Inn. 715-779-5111

Pack: Your parka—this is a place for cold-weather adventures. Consider going on a dog-sledding excursion.

P.S.: Take a side trip to the Apostle Islands’ stunning ice caves.
