Why: Nestled among the spruce and aspen trees in the southwest corner of the Big Sky state, Papoose Creek Lodge maximizes the area’s resources. 888-674-3030

How: Northwest Airlines has direct two-hour flights to Bozeman ($400 at press-time), which is about half an hour northeast of the lodge.

Stay: There’s a three-night minimum for both the rooms and the cabins. For a three-night stay, packages start at $1,005 and include all your meals, plus happy hour drinks and access to the lodge’s canoes, trails, and other facilities.

Eat: Steak. The beef comes from local small-herd, grass-fed cows. Everything on the lodge’s menu is regional and organic whenever possible—much of it Montana-sourced.

Pack: Your fly-fishing gear—or rent it. This is A River Runs Through It country.

P.S.: Don’t miss happy hour, when you can sip wine and talk wildlife with the lodge naturalists.
