You asked: I’d love to serve cupcakes at our reception, but my mom says everyone will expect a traditional cake. Is it okay to have cupcakes instead?

Heidi says:
I hate to contradict Mom, but in my book, the fact that “everyone will expect a traditional cake” is reason enough to surprise your guests with cupcakes! Cupcakes allow you to have different flavors of cakes and icing, incorporate your wedding colors, and “treat” your loved ones to something unexpected. Arranged on a tiered tower, they can have just as much visual impact as a regular ol’ cake. But a budgetary heads up: Cupcakes almost always cost more than traditional wedding cake. Be sure to get estimates before you make the cupcake commitment. For more great cake ideas, visit our Cakes + Catering section.
