If you thought your nuptial duties ended when you bought the ring and she said yes, think again. Your wedding day is a chance to hone your personal aesthetic and show everyone how nicely you clean up. Whether you go classic in coat and tails, modern in a suit and tie, or semi-casual in khakis and a button-down, here are a few pointers to aid you along the way.

Tux
Soon after choosing your groomsmen, start thinking about what you want to wear. The decision should be based on location (formal, semi-formal, outdoors), the time of day, the season, and what the bridal party will be wearing. Grooms often choose to buy their own tuxedo or formal suit, but be sure to reserve rentals for your buddies.

Alterations
If you do buy your tuxedo or suit, make sure to have it altered. Your mom might have mended your grade-school khakis, but this is the time to hire a professional. Ask the salesperson who helped you with your purchase for some recommendations. They may even offer on-site, complimentary alterations.

Accessories
Once you’ve picked out your tuxedo or suit, it’s time to think accessories. Do you want to go old school in a cummerbund and bow tie or more contemporary in a vest and necktie? Does your shirt need cuff links? Does your tie need a tie clip? If possible, borrow accessories from an older male relative—it will make a rental feel more like your own. Also invest in a nice new pair of boxers or briefs that are breathable and lightweight.

Hair
The week before the wedding, make a salon appointment. Have your hair cut (no big changes, just clean up your current style) and get a manicure (just buff and clean—no polish!). Remember: The ceremony may last just minutes, but the pictures will last a lifetime.
