Inject life into dull spaces with this year's hot hues.

Nothing changes the ambiance of a room like a fresh coat of paint. Are you ready to take a big color leap but not sure what colors you like? To help define the shades that make you feel the most comfortable, start tearing out ads and articles from magazines. “Just pull out some pictures—whatever attracts you, don’t analyze it,” says Carla Mertz, a designer with Gabberts in Edina. Once you’ve determined a color palette you may like, start with smaller spaces, such as the powder room or an accent wall in the lower level.

Look into these three big color trends for 2008 as a source of inspiration:

Naturally connected. This year’s blues, browns, and greens are richer in tone; think of colors that borrow from the ocean, sky, stones, soil, and trees. Color sample: Sherwin-Williams’ Oakmoss, SW 6180
Food for thought. One look in the pantry can influence your color choices. Spicy tones such as pumpkin, wasabi, mustard, olive, salsa, and cinnamon encourage warmth. Color sample: Benjamin Moore’s Caramel Latte, 2166-20
Globe trekker. From the jeweled tones associated with Morocco to the rich reds of the Far East, global destinations can stir our imaginations and impact our homes. Color sample: Barcelona Blue, E22-2

Tip for the Color Timid
Ready for more color but not willing to paint? Incorporate low doses of color through throw pillows, hand towels, or decorative boxes.
